In MKDS, not all tracks are playable online, but some hackers of course figured out how to hack it and change variables so that they could select the non-offline courses online, which most of them actually work quite well online. While reading some info, I came accross someone mentioning Shy Guy and hacking the game to play as him. Heres what was said:
"There is one model/cart in the game that you can't play as online: the Shy Guy. He's used in the DS Download Play mode. It's probably possible for someone to do a hack like the Online Courses hack that lets you choose the shy guy model and play as him online.
I don't know how one would go about doing something like this, but it's worth a shot. You can probably edit the character select screen similarly to the Online Course Select screen. Of course, it would probably affect the offline char select screens too."
"Shy Guy can be used in Grand Prix mode, but the game crashes at the character select screen if you try to use him. I am not sure if the crash occurs only locally. But it may be caused by missing sound effects. I will try to look into it, any way.
Other than that issue, Shy Guy is definitely playable. But until the character select screen problem can be fixed, you only show up as Shy Guy on your end. Anyone racing you will see the character you selected at the start of the race."
So yea, even if a cheating device is released, it doesn't seem like playing as Shy Guy would work very well, and hacking seems to be out of the question also given the above problems. All I have left is to hope for some sort of expansion for the GBA slot which allows all courses to be played online and Shy Guy to be playable, which may have little chance of course.
Just thought I'd post that for anyone interested. At least I have Dry Bones, and Toad for that matter as hes my back-up should no Mario enemies be playable in future Mario Karts.
